Ayr

Before flying to Spain, we broke up our journey from St Andrews to Glasgow-Prestwick (the lovely airport in the middle of nowhere that Ryanair uses) with an overnight stay in Ayr. As I've mentioned before, Ayrshire was the home of the Fullerton clan, so we planned to get in touch with Matt's family roots. And drink beer, because Ayr is also home to the Ayr Brewing Company.

Once we got into town and checked into our B&B, a lovely family home on the edge of town, we headed straight to the hotel that houses the brewing company. After making friends with some locals at the bar, we took some beer outside and enjoyed the warmth of the west coast of Scotland. Beer + sun = happiness. See?

After a surprisingly delicious dinner in town (have I mentioned that dining out in Scotland is generally an underwhelming experience?), we were heading to the beach when we came across Fullarton Street, complete with the Fullarton Cafe. Finding Matt's heritage and getting photo documentation? Check.

The beach in Ayr was gorgeous, especially as the clouds rolled in and we could see the Isle of Arran being lit up by some "god-rays" (thank you, Ian, for putting this term in my vocabulary). While chatting with our host at the B&B later, he told us we could catch a ferry over to Arran, and then "ferry hop" along all the islands to hit the whisky distilleries. So, whoever comes to visit us first (hint, hint)...that's the plan.

After a delicious home-cooked Scottish breakfast in the morning (we were the only guests at our B&B, so it was sort of like staying with a friend and being waited on more than usual), we set off to the airport and Spain. I've got 500+ pictures to sort through for that leg of the trip, so give us a little time to get those posts up!
