Scottish Thanksgiving

It's been a while - blog stalkers, friends, and family. I'm sorry. But we've been busy: the Welly Ball was an adventure, we did some shopping in Dundee, celebrated a book launch, did some/a lot of writing...and now we're less than three weeks away from our trip to the Northwest! Whew!

So anyways, our first Thanksgiving in Scotland was pretty excellent. First of all, we had wonderful dinner companions: James, Andrea, Scott, and Mandy. I was a little nervous about cooking my first turkey (and having people eat it!) but I think it went okay.

I made two pumpkin pies with my carefully hoarded canned pumpkin from a care package. They were really ugly, so I decided to make these prettier desserts instead! Hearts were the only shapes I could make without a stencil though, so they weren't exactly seasonally appropriate. Oh well.

Andie made some delicious butternut squash soup, Matt took on the potatoes and gravy, and we managed some stuffing and bread and beans so we hit all the bases. Oh, and there was LOTS of wine (of course). James helped me set a very proper table, and we recycled some empty shotgun shells from the Welly Ball for an appropriate centerpiece.

We finished off our feasting with cards and a screening of "The Queen." When in the United Kingdom....? I got to Skype a little with some family in Colorado, and it was nice to have the day off. I'm thankful I work for an American company!

This week we're heading to Edinburgh for a little Christmas shopping, sightseeing, and a talk on Deleuze. Stay tuned for Matt's recap of the Welly Ball, but here's a teaser photo from the start of the night. We wanted to try out Matt's new wellies in the street and found the perfect spot. Honestly, when else do you get to wear ball clothes and rain boots?

  2. SO AM I! Although so far, it's not looking very similar to the Yule Ball. Also, when are you two going to London to do photo montages reminiscent of Winning London? I'm staying tuned for those.

  3. Aha. Now you know the way to set the table the perfectly accurate English way. I'll want to know too!
